Sound Pit
Saturday 24 October / 11:00 am to 1:00 pm / Platform 2, Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff
Project Outline
When Luigi Russolo wrote the Futurist manifesto ‘The Art of Noises’ in 1913, he was describing a sea change in the way in which we listen to the world around us. The industrial revolution had brought a new world of sound to our ears – one in which we could “distinguish a thousand different noises”.
Today, in the information age of the 21st century, as Russolo foresaw, we can now “distinguish ten, twenty, or thirty thousand different noises, not merely in a simply imitative way, but to combine them according to our imagination”.
The Sound Pit will explore a renewed interest in the art of listening to the world, and how it is that now, deep into the networked era, musicians and sonic practitioners are remaking and rehearing the sound world in a variety of ways. The desire to create new instruments and find new sounds has never been stronger.
